A native of Athens, Georgia, Kane Stanley is a drummer and percussionist who has studied and performed drum set and hand percussion for more than 30 years. Kane has toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean, performing at festivals, clubs, and venues with artists and bands including Cosmic Charlie, Entropy, the Donna Hopkins Band, Natti Love Joys, Ralph Roddenberry Band, Gimme Hendrix, JGBCB, and numerous jazz ensembles.
Kane’s musical influences are wide-ranging, with a particular passion for Classic Rock, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Reggae, Afro-Cuban, and Brazilian styles. Known for his feel, versatility, and deep respect for groove, Kane moves fluidly between drum set and percussion traditions, always in service of the music.
Kane has studied drum set and percussion with Tom Rafferty (Atlanta, GA, 1989–1993), Dr. Arvin Scott (University of Georgia, 1995–1996), Mamady Keita (2012), and Ryan “Manito” Wendel (1996–present). In 1998, Kane attended the Berklee College of Music Summer Percussion Festival, where he studied Afro-Cuban drum set with Walfredo Reyes Sr. and Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez. He has also participated in master classes with Jeff Sipe, Jamey Haddad, David Garibaldi, Denagan Janvier Honfo, and many others.
Kane is a founding member of ¡MOYUBA! Afro-Caribbean Percussion Ensemble of Athens, Georgia. In 1998, the group traveled to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where Kane received what he describes as the education of a lifetime, studying and performing with the band R.A.M. and members of master drummer Frisner Augustine’s family. Dedicated to preserving and sharing the sacred music of the African Diaspora, ¡MOYUBA! has taught at universities and schools throughout the Southeast and has been featured on Drum Talk TV and Pandora Radio.
¡MOYUBA!’s work attracted the attention of Cuba’s legendary Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, who traveled to Athens, Georgia for a residency in 2003. During their time in the United States, members of ¡MOYUBA! were selected to record an instructional video featuring Augustine Diaz, musical director of Los Muñequitos de Matanzas.
Kane completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Georgia, earning a degree in Journalism with a focus on Audio Video Production. His writing has been published in Flagpole Magazine, and he has served as a featured lecturer at the University of Georgia.
